The Los Angeles Rams have proposed a rule change that will address a controversial 2-point conversion against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 16.
One of the most confusing plays occurred in Week 16 between the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams.
During what appeared to be a botched attempt at a 2-point conversion, officials reviewed what presumably was an incomplete pass, which instead became a successful attempt. Now, the Rams have filed a rule change that will address the controversial play.
In the fourth quarter of the game, Seahawks quarterback threw a pass intended for running back Zach Charbonnet, which bounced off the helmet of Jared Verse. With the ball falling to the turf and the whistle blowing, it appeared to be dead.
Despite the dead ball, officials reviewed the play and ruled that it was a successful attempt. This was due to the ball hitting Verse in the head, but he was behind the line of scrimmage, making it a lateral.
Since Charbonnet picked the ball up and walked into the endzone, it was deemed a successful 2-point attempt.
Per CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, the Rams have now proposed a rule that will alter how the play is deemed successful.
"One can speculate as to what changes the Rams are seeking. Perhaps they wish to apply the fumble rules on a two-point try to a lateral that has been touched by the defender and goes forward. Or they want to have a time limit for a review to be initiated. The change could be related to the ball being possessed after the whistle blew. It may seek a clearer definition of what "immediate continuing action" is. Or it could be none of these," Jone wrote.
One might argue that the play should not have been reviewed due to the whistle being blown, but that might also be in the language for the rule proposal from the Rams.
Rule proposals are generally submitted around this time, or right before the NFL Combine, as the owners' meeting takes place in late March. The rules committee will reveal rule changes, which will then be voted on.
The Rams might be able to draw support from other teams, but it might also be a bit dubious due to no other team dealing with this rare and confusing situation.
Another potential rule change that is incoming has to do with the now-infamous "Tush Push" being banned, but that has not yet happened.
