The Los Angeles Rams have released a video that shows the first look at rookie quarterback Ty Simpson slinging the ball in practice.
There has been a lot said about the Los Angeles Rams drafting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, but the rookie himself appeared to blow right past that when asked about it. That is the right attitude to have, and it does not matter any longer what anyone thinks, as the Crimson Tide prospect is fully on the team.
Los Angeles often uses rookie mini camp as a three-day period to integrate rokie players into how the organization runs, which leaves little time for actual practice. Now, the team has released a video that shows Simpson's first action in throwing the ball as a member of the Rams.
During the nearly 20-second long video, Simpson can be seen working alongside Matthew Stafford, Stetson Bennet IV, and UDFA Matthew Caldwell.
Sporting a Rams hat, Simpson throws the ball cleanly, while engaging in the drills. Though it is not much, it is the first time that the rookie has been seen on the field engaging in practice.
Though the OTA program starts at the end of May, the offseason program has been well underway, and the veteran players all returned to the building in late April. This is the time when all players are getting back into the swing of things with fundamentals and more.
Simpson and his fellow rookies are likely not only learning from their veteran counterparts but getting used to what the organization is asking of them.
Though Stafford is the leading man, there will be a big competition for the backup quarterback position. Both Rams general manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay indicated as much when they were deep in explaining their reasoning behind bringing in Simpson.
That said, it is believed that the rookie prospect will be deep in competition with Bennett to determine who will be backing up Stafford for the 2026 season. Caldwell may be angling for a practice squad position, though the Rams could also go into the season with just three quarterbacks.
Though the video of Simpson might be considered nothing, it also showcases him already lining up alongside Stafford. There was some additional drama that surrounded the pair, as it was initially reported that Kelly Stafford reached out to the rookie, but Matthew did not.
Simpson cleared all that up during the Rams' WalkUnited LA event, when he confirmed Stafford did text him, and offered his excitement for the young passer to be on the team. Now, it will be his job to put his best foot forward to try to lock down the backup position behind his mentor, presumably for the next couple of seasons.
