More details have been revealed regarding Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay and his viral draft moment, which showed him looking upset after the first round.
There might not be a draft moment that is talked about this season more than the Los Angeles Rams taking Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Despite the pundits, fans, and more taking umbrage with the pick, the matter became worse when head coach Sean McVay appeared to be angry in the team's presser following the first round.
McVay indicated the following day that he was not angry about the pick or at general manager Les Snead, and went so far as to say they are "buddies." However, a new report from Chris Simms indicates that McVay told him his face was due to a completely separate argument.
"What he [McVay] did tell me was the reason he in the press conference was pissed off had neither to do with him acting or the pick, but had to do with some sort of volatile situation that happened before they went out there. There was some little argument about something. He assured me it was nothing like major, but he was a little peed off right there at that moment. That's what he told me," Simms said.
Simms indicated that something had occurred for McVay before he walked out to do the presser with Snead. This was called a "volatile situation," by Simms, but that sort of does not smooth things out.
Did the argument that occur between McVay and Snead, and if not, who was involved in the argument?
The only thing that has been hyper-focused on was how angry McVay appeared to be, and how he did not seem too keen on talking about Simpson in that moment. Again, the Rams head coach did indicate on the second day that he was in on picking the Alabama quarterback, despite what his face may have indicated.
McVay has always been a straight shooter, so it is believed that he is telling the truth. The issue is his over-explaining the situation and the pick in the days that followed.
There was also the fact that McVay had to state several times over that Matthew Stafford remains the team's leader for as long as he wants it, which is great, but not usually something that needs to be stated if everything is copasetic.
Regardless, Simpson is now a member of the Rams, and he will likely sit behind Stafford for potentially the next two seasons. The organization and the MVP quarterback have yet to finalize a new deal, though reports indicated they were deep in conversations before the draft happened.
Everyone can continue speculating on what McVay's true feelings are, but he has thrown his support behind both Simpson and Stafford, likely for everyone to move past the idea that something more nefarious is going on behind the scenes.
Saying there was an argument and volatile situation before the presser does not help matters, but it may have just been a completely unrelated and separate issue for the Rams.
