Los Angeles Rams star wide receiver Tutu Atwell has been dealing with a nagging hamstring injury that has yet to fully heal. After spending more than four games on the IR list, head coach Sean McVay offered a disappoiinting update on his return.
Atwell suffered the hamstring injury in Week 6, which led to him only appearing for a brief few plays in Week 7. After the Week 8, he still did not get better, leading to him being placed on IR.
Atwell was eligble to return in Week 13, but McVay and the Rams did not activate him off the IR list. Now, it appears that will be the case for Week 14.
Adam Grosbard of the Orange County Register asked McVay if Atwell would be activated following his 21-day practice window opening, but the situation received an unfortunate update.
"We haven't gone down that road yet. But there are some number things like we've talked about. It's just been a unique set of circumstances," McVay said.
Apparently, Atwell is not set to return for Week 14 either. Though he would be a welcome sight for the team and the wide receiver room, the hamstring ailment appears to still be holding him back.
In Atwell's absence, Davante Adams has emerged as a favorite red zone target for Matthew Stafford. He currently leads the league with 14 receiving touchdowns.
Puka Nacua still leads the way with 1,019 yards, and four touchdowns.
Los Angeles' offense could become even more dangerous with Atwell back and fully healthy. Though it sounds as though McVay is not ready to bring him back, he could return for the team's inevitable playoff push.
Atwell has 164 yards and one touchdown through six games played this season. His most succesful game came in Week 4 when he secured 88 yards and one touchdown.
The Rams offense could clearly be more powerful with Atwell also available next to Nacua and Adams, but hamstring injuries can be tricky.
Atwell returning too soon could lead to a re-aggravation, which may be why McVay stated it's a "unique circumstance."
It sounds more like Atwell might not return until Week 15, when the Rams will face the Detroit Lions.
