Ty Simpson is set to take the field as part of the Los Angeles Rams rookie mini camp, and his expectations have reportedly been set.
Despite the offseason for the NFL kicking off for all 32 teams, it is the rookies who will experience their first mini camp to get them integrated and adjusted to the professional level. For the Los Angeles Rams, their rookie mini camp will take place from May 8 to 10.
This rookie mini camp gives the coaching staff their first glances at their young talent, as they fill out paperwork, engage in practice, and start to learn their new playbooks. This is also the chance the organization will get to see Ty Simpson in action, who already has some strong expectations.
Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, he spoke to a source on a team, who broke down a bit about what the Rams are searching for regarding their rookie signal caller.
"What do they want to see from Simpson? Just command of the operation. Ability to adjust and process information. Those aspects are gonna be his superpowers with the Rams. He is not the huge Matthew Stafford arm. He wins mentally. That's why they like him. Les Snead, the GM told me he 'Likes Simpson's central nervous system. He just has the ability to figure out the game with his mind.' So, they want to see that in full display," Fowler said.
Simpson does have an innate ability to protect the ball, as his 1.1 percent interception percentage when throwing the ball is among the lowest. He is mentioned alongside quarterbacks like Dak Prescott, Caleb Williams, and Bo Nix, all of whom excelled at protecting the ball in college.
Simpson was drafted for the sole purpose of replacing Matthew Stafford when the time comes, but the Rams need to be comfortable enough with him to hand him the reins when Stafford chooses to walk away from the game. That means the young prospect will need to prove he can handle the offense.
Rookie mini camp is only three days and not nearly enough to make that determination, but it will give head coach Sean McVay and the rest of the coaching staff enough time to see what Simpson can do as he takes the field.
Offseason workouts will begin later in May, followed by mandatory mini-camp at the beginning of June. These dates will be very important for the team as a whole and the rookie plans coming in.
There is a good chance that Simpson does not play at all in 2026 and 2027, depending on what the new deal for Stafford looks like. If that ends up being the case, his most important job is to learn as much as he can from the MVP quarterback and grasp the offense in a significant way.
There is already a lot of pressure on Simpson due to him being drafted in the first round, but even more so considering he is the quarterback that the organization believes is the next in line to run the offense when Stafford retires.
