Rams set to hire former Syracuse DC Robert Wright cover image

The Los Angeles Rams are adding more to their coaching staff, bringing in former Syracuse defensive coordinator Robert Wright.

Despite the core of the Los Angeles Rams coaching staff staying in place, the team has already lost Mike LaFleur to the Arizona Cardinals. Assistant head coach and pass game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant might also be on his way out.

Even if the Rams did not lose some coaches, there were going to be changes, and now Sean McVay is adding former Syracuse defensive coordinator Robert Wright.

College Football expert Pete Thamel reported on the hiring.

"Sources: The LA Rams are set to hire Robert Wright as a defensive assistant. Wright is the former DC at Syracuse and Buffalo. In his first year at Syracuse, the Orange went 10-3 and defeated No. 6 Miami. Wright is a Mike Elko disciple with stops at Duke and Texas AM," Thamel said on X.

Wright was with Duke in 2022 as a defensive assistant, moving to Buffalo as defensive coordinator in 2023.

During the 2024 season, he was hired by Syracuse, where he worked as the co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers coach through the 2025 season.

Wright is set to join the Rams as a defensive assistant and should be working directly with defensive coordinator Chris Shula. Shula was up for multiple head coach opportunities, though he was not selected to lead a team just yet.

Shula is likely to obtain more opportunities to be a head coach in the near future, but he will remain on McVay's staff.

Rams coaching updates

As mentioned, Pleasant is set to interview for the open Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator position, and could be on his way out.

Wright will still have the benefit of learning from some great coaches on the defensive side of the ball.

McVay has been busy adding coaching talent. Bubba Ventrone was hired as special teams coordinator following the release of Chase Blackburn.

Former head coach and Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury was also hired to be an offensive consultant for the Rams as well.

Oddly enough, the Rams have not yet announced a new offensive coordinator with the exodus of LaFleur, who is now the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

It was believed that Kingsbury might obtain the offensive coordinator position, but that does not appear to be the case. McVay indicated the team would go on an exhaustive search with in-house candidates, along with others outside of the organization.

A logical in-house candidate is current pass game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase, who was also up for some head coach and coordinator positions around the league. He was not hired by any other team and could be next in line to run the offense for McVay.
