The Los Angeles Rams have a true shutdown corner they can rely on for not only this season but for the next four seasons.
The Rams traded for All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie a week ago, and the team agreed to a record-breaking deal a few days later.
McDuffie signed a massive four-year, $124 million extension. The contract made him the highest-paid cornerback at $31 million annually, with $100 million guaranteed. The deal runs through 2030, with a 2026 base salary of $13.6 million while on his fifth-year option.
A ton of responsibility just fell on the 25-year-old, but he is ready to embrace it and tackle it head-on.
On Thursday, the Rams officially introduced McDuffie to the team. In his introductory press conference, McDuffie fully embraced the role he will take on with the team following his record-breaking contract extension.
“Just being one of those guys that, when teams think of the Rams, they can look at me and be like, ‘OK, that’s what it means to be a Ram, that’s what this team is about," McDuffie said.
The contract is one that the Rams feel confident about moving forward. McDuffie is only 25 years old and has established himself as one of the best shutdown corners in the league.
During his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, he played in several high-stakes games and proved to be a valuable contributor. The two-time Super Bowl champion already boasts an impressive resume.
In his four-year career, McDuffie has recorded 246 total tackles, three interceptions, 34 passes defensed, eight forced fumbles, and 5.5 sacks. He's started all 56 regular season games and all 10 playoff games he appeared in.
He has made an impact in his time in the league so far, and that is set to increase as a member of the Rams. Los Angeles has paid him like such, and he appears to be ready for the challenge.
McDuffie is the hometown kid coming back to lead his part in getting Los Angeles back to the Super Bowl.
It was no secret that the Rams are going all in this season. The secondary, specifically the cornerback position, was a clear need for the team, and they addressed that quickly by adding McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.
These two bring toughness, tenacity, and experience to a Rams team that was arguably one play away from another Super Bowl appearance in 2025. As the Rams set their sights on finishing the job in 2026, they’ve added key reinforcements to a position group that badly needed an upgrade.
