Los Angeles Rams rookie Ty Simpson remains one of two rookies who have yet to sign their rookie contracts.
The Los Angeles Rams have a lot to look forward to this offseason, including the additions of Myles Garrett, Trent McDuffie, and their incoming rookie class. While there is plenty of time between now and the start of the regular season, the team has been integrating itself back into football life.
One potential roadblock is quarterback Ty Simpson, who has yet to sign his rookie contract. He remains one of two draftees that have not signed their deal, with Las Vegas Raiders Fernando Mendoza being the other.
Why Hasn't Ty Simpson Signed Rookie Deal?
There are many factors to consider when it comes to player contracts, especially those of rookie players. The landscape of the NFL has changed dramatically, with rookies now angling to sign fully guaranteed deals.
It makes sense for players to want the best for their given situations, as many things can happen: injury, being cut, etc.
Despite the NFL's collective bargaining agreement laying out what a rookie player can earn based on their draft position and other factors, complications can still arise.
Simpson has likely not signed due to working out some sort of language in his contract that would allow for more guaranteed money. As stated, anything can happen during the start of an NFL career, and that guaranteed money is what protects players.
Simpson is also expected to be the successor to Matthew Stafford, but when he steps in to lead the Rams remains to be seen. The Los Angeles organization may want to keep him on the bench for the next two seasons, which is what Stafford has also been signed through.
If that is the case, and that has been demonstrated to Simpson, then it would be even more important for him to get more guaranteed money. The Rams could easily choose to move on from the rookie if they do not like what they see from him during training camp and preseason.
Drafting a player high in the first round is never an indication that they will fizzle out, but there have been instances of players being "draft busts."
Without guaranteed money, Simpson could sit on the bench before being cut. This is also just a presumed situation, and nothing that has or will happen. However, it is not out of the realm of possibility.
The Rams have invested a lot in taking Simpson at No. 13 overall, so his success does matter a great deal to the organization. However, if it turns out not to be the player they hope he can be, they will need to move on.
