Former All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman doesn't believe that the Los Angeles Rams are clear-cut Super Bowl favorites despite adding Myles Garrett to the team.
During a recent appearance on "The Richard Sherman" podcast, the former Pro Bowler explained why he does not view the Rams as the overwhelming Super Bowl favorites, even after trading for Myles Garrett.
While Sherman acknowledged the impact Garrett will have on the Rams' defense, he added that he doesn't believe that the addition of him, while replacing Jared Verse, is substantial.
"I think he's going to be incredibly impactful, but I think Jared Verse was incredibly impactful,” Sherman said. "He’s not Myles Garrett. We're not going to argue that. But it's not going from, you know, an average to below average player to a generational player. It's going from a Pro Bowl caliber, probably borderline All-Pro player to a Hall of Famer, you know what I mean?"
The future Hall of Famer also added that the Rams are an older team, especially at some key positions like the wide receiver room. Those are fair questions to pose entering the season and an area many will be looking at regarding the Rams.
Health will be vital for the Rams, and that goes for every other team. If the Rams are a healthy bunch (or at least for the most part), they could achieve what many believe they could. If they are banged up, especially to players in key positions, things won’t look too bright for Los Angeles.
That's always a question mark for any championship contender. Nonetheless, when a player of Garrett's caliber becomes available, you do what you can to make the move. Regardless of cost, acquiring one of the league's premier defensive players is a decision teams would make every time.
There is no denying Vere’s talent, but it’s hard to see him reach the heights that Garrett has reached and has the potential of reaching in his time in Los Angeles.
Garrett changes the way offenses operate; Verse doesn’t have the same impact, no matter how great he was with the Rams.
The Super Bowl is not a foregone conclusion for the Rams. A ton of things still need to bounce their way, and it would likely start in their division.
The NFC West is home to two other legitimate Super Bowl contenders, including the defending champions, the Seattle Seahawks, and a juggernaut in the San Francisco 49ers.
Those four matchups this upcoming season will have major implications and playoff-like atmospheres. While a Rams title this season is far from a guarantee, they’ve seemingly put themselves in the best position possible.
