The playing status of Los Angeles Rams legend Aaron Donald remains the biggest storyline of the offseason as the 2026 campaign draws closer.

The burning question that everyone has in the football world is whether Donald will play or will he remain retired. It’s unclear if that will be the case, but the 35-year-old has not completely shut down the idea of making a comeback.

Donald’s potential return is generating significant buzz, and while there was always chatter about it, the future Hall of Famer shut it down in the past.

However, that all changed after the Rams acquired two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. Los Angeles traded for the superstar defender earlier in the month, and many started to speculate if Donald would decide to run it back with Garrett.

Timeline of Donald's Return

Initially, Donald shot down a return on May 14, during an apperance on the "Not Just Football with Cam Heyward" podcast, where he revealed being content with stepping away.

"People ask me that all the time, 'You sure you don’t want to play?' I’ll be like 'To be honest with you, I have no urge to play football no more,'" Donald said. "Sometimes in the back of my head I be like, 'Do I want to go out there again?' I think about it and I’m like 'Nah man.'"

Donald's tune changed the day after the Garrett trade. On June 2 NFL analyst and TV personality Pat McAfee revealed that he had reached out to Donald, and he said that the addition had him thinking about making the comeback.

"It for sure got me thinking," Donald wrote.

"35, removed two years ago, gotta see if that fire can light back up."

The closest person to Donald, his wife Erica, dismissed the rumors on that same day McAfee received the text. She took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and sent this message to the fans.

 "Y’all are hilarious," Erica wrote.

Donald’s wife certainly has insight into the situation, but we have yet to hear from No. 99 himself.

Not only has he yet to confirm if he won’t or will return, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, who is as plugged in as anyone, predicted Donald will make a comeback.

On June 9, Schefter made his own feelings on the matter be known, indicating that there is a real chance Donald could come back.

"When you talk to all the people involved, no one is coming out right now and saying 'Aaron Donald is coming back,' Schefter said. "But everyone is acknowledging it is a possibility. And the fact that it is even a possibility in June, tells me that I think there's every possibility it will become more real in July. I think, if and when they present a plan to him, as to how he would be used, I think it's more likely than not that he'll be back."

Will Aaron Donald Come Back?

That’s the million-dollar question. His fit and role with the team have been made clear among the speculation, but it’s all up to Donald whether he wants to put the pads back on.

Donald has cited in that post that he is mentally and physically burned out when he announced his return in March of 2024. However, that could be all in the past.

It's notable that Donald has yet to publicly shut down the speculation surrounding a potential return, which has only fueled further discussion about his future. Because of that, I believe that he will make a return to the gridiron.

When that does happen, it won't be in the same capacity as before, as it would be unreasonable to expect him to handle the same workload he carried during his prime. Still, in a limited role, Donald's impact could still be significant, as he has the talent, instinct, and experience to disrupt opposing offenses on any given snap.
