The Tuohy family is claiming to have paid Michael Oher "$138,311.01'' in proceeds from The Blind Side, and from where we sit, it is easy to assume that is true.
Meanwhile, from where we sit, we cannot believe that the claim/fact that they did so ... is their defense.
There is now reportedly a sworn document filed in a Tennessee court that states that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy paid Oher, the real-life subject of the hit movie and then a standout offensive lineman with the Baltimore Ravens, gave him $138,311.01 in 10 installment payment from 2007 to 2023.
The family's lawyers are claiming that the payments, per a report, "represented the former offensive lineman's share of profits from the movie and book about his life.''
But ... the movie grossed approximately $330 million. So how could the subject of the film's "share'' be "$138,311.01''?
We are not lawyers and we are not film producers. But we work on the assumption that "$138,311.01'' is about the same amount a Hollywood film production starring Sandra Bullock spends on fancy food for the fancy actors plus "craft services'' - that is, the catered coffee and donuts and lunch and snacks for the cast and crew.
From the lawyers: "By agreement between the family members including Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, their children SJ and Collins as well as Michael Oher, the book and movie proceeds were to be split five ways.''
We're not clear why the Tuohy family members, including the children, received what they received. But it is Oher's position that the Tuohy children each got $225,000 and 2.5 percent of the Oscar-winning film's net proceeds.
That would equate to millions of dollars for the Tuohy children. But Oher - by the family's own (proud?) admission got "$138,311.01''?
We don't know who is lying about claims of "fake adoptions'' and the claim that the family, in bringing Oher from his poverty-stricken life into their wealthy one, included "tricking him into signing a conservatorship that gave them legal authority to make business arrangements in his name,'' as is alleged.
But we now know that Michael Oher's life story is worth $330 million. And that the Tuohy's seem to be almost boasting that they rewarded him with "$138,311.01''?
