NFL Analyst says Ravens remain top choice for head coach for a major reason cover image

An NFL analyst has named the Baltimore Ravens as the top head coaching position over the likes of the Buffalo Bills and other teams for one major reason.

With the surprising firing of Sean McDermott, the Buffalo Bills have opened up one of the most exciting head coaching positions in the NFL, especially with former MVP Josh Allen at quarterback.

However, NFL analyst and former Super Bowl champion Chris Canty still believes that the Baltimore Ravens have the best head coaching opening in the league.

"To me, you have an organization that already has championship pedigree," Canty said on First Take. "You've got an owner in Steve Bisciotti that has hardware in the trophy case. So that's a great place to start."

Additionally, Canty pointed out that the Ravens have more salary cap space and have about the same draft capital as the Bills over the next three years.

That being said, Baltimore particularly sets itself apart from Buffalo when it comes to one important category: their division.

"It just seems like the one in Baltimore presents itself as the better of the two because there is a lower bar to clear when it comes to the competition in the division," Canty said.

"The New England Patriots with [quarterback] Drake Maye and [head coach] Mike Vrabel ain't going nowhere. The lone survivor when it comes to the AFC North is Zac Taylor, and he's going into the final year of his contract.

"I just feel like if you're the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, there is a better opportunity for you to have division supremacy than with the Buffalo Bills, and, of course, we all know that winning your division is the surest path to being able to punch your ticket to the postseason."

Canty isn't wrong. In a single season, Vrabel completely turned around the Patriots and helped make Maye an MVP candidate in his second NFL season. Given their immediate success, it is unlikely that Vrabel and Maye will be going anywhere.

Meanwhile, the AFC North is likely to be one of the most unpredictable divisions for the next few years.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns are also looking for a new head coach, and the Cincinnati Bengals have had mixed results over the past five seasons despite having some of the best offensive players in the league with quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase.

If a coach can build a solid foundation with the Ravens in the AFC North that performs consistently, they are much more likely to make it to the playoffs. That is not to say that the Bengals and Steelers will not be competitive, but Baltimore still has a roster that can compete.
