The Baltimore Ravens made a big move to bring back backup quarterback Tyler Huntley on a two-year deal ahead of free agency.
Huntley comes back on a deal that is worth up to $11 million, so there could be some stipulations in the form of performance accelerators in the contract. Either way, Lamar Jackson has his backup in place.
It makes perfect sense for Huntley to return, as he took perfect command of the offense when Jackson was dealing with his hamstring and other ailments. In his tw starts, he secured two wins while throwing 293 yards and two touchdowns.
Huntley began his career with the Ravens, playing from 2020 to 2023. He would jump on practice squads in 2024, before landing with the Miami Dolphins and playing for the injured Tua Tagovailoa.
Despite limited starts, Huntley has proven to be a viable backup. Through six seasons, he has 3,212 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He also has 795 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Huntley just knows how to take over when the Ravens need it, and the Cooper Rush experiment in 2025 was further proof of that.
Rush took over when Jackson initially hurt his hamstring in Week 4, but the quarterback could not get the offense going. After suffering two consecutive losses, head coach John Harbaugh put in Huntley, who propelled the team to a win.
Huntley's ability to run and throw the ball is similar in nature to Jackson's, hence why he fits the offense so well.
Instead of potentially having to sign a quarterback like Jimmy Garoppolo or Davis Mills, the Ravens chose instead to lock up a backup they know can get the job done.
General manager Eric DeCosta has been making moves ahead of free agency, with the biggest being the blockbuster trade of Maxx Crosby. The deal for Huntley also points to the Ravens wanting to stabilize the roster and capitalize on the window that Jackson and the roster have.
Despite a rough 2025 season, the Ravens should still be one of the most competitive in the AFC. Bringing back Huntley and the massive upgrade in the pass rush that Crosby provides will potentially get Baltimore back to contention.
