The Baltimore Ravens defense could receive a significant boost with the potential addition of Ohio State's All-American DT Kayden McDonald.
The Baltimore Ravens hold 11 picks in the upcoming draft.
The Ravens will look to bolster their roster in a major way, especially after losing several key players in free agency. Baltimore has an opportunity to address those gaps with their draft picks, as they aim to strengthen both sides of the ball.
Baltimore has their eye on a ton of the top players in the draft, and one of those players includes Ohio State All-American defensive tackle Kayden McDonald.
McDonald is projected to be selected within the first two rounds of the draft, and the Ravens appear to have him firmly on their radar.
According to ESPN Ravens insider Jamison Hensley, the Ravens met with McDonald ahead of the draft.
McDonald has established himself as one of the best defensive tackles in the draft. He ranks as the 20th overall prospect and No. 4 in the position ranks.
In 34 games with the Buckeyes, McDonald was phenomenal, especially in his last two seasons. In three seasons, he tallied 85 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, three sacks, and three passes defended.
McDonald could be a major difference maker for a Ravens defense that desperately needs to upgrade the defensive interior line. Given the uncertainty of fellow defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike's health and that of 36-year-old John Jenkins, it’s clear the Ravens need to get younger on that front.
The team explored options in free agency but was unable to land any key additions, making the draft the next — and perhaps best — route to address the position.
McDonald has the intangibles to develop into a strong player at the next level. His ability to jolt blockers with his knock-back power, combined with his early snap recognition in the run game and disciplined shed decisions to defend multiple gaps, makes him an intriguing fit.
These traits could bolster the Ravens' defense in a massive way. Last season, the Ravens' defense was far from what it had been in years past. With new head coach Jesse Minter at the helm, he'll look to guide the Ravens' defense back to an elite unit.
According to NFL Draft analyst Lance Zierlein, he is projected to be an eventual starter, with his NFL comparison being veteran nose tackle D.J. Reader.
McDonald stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 326 pounds. He is known for his immense strength, ability to anchor double teams, and disruptive play in the middle of the defensive line.
