Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter confirms that the return of Nnamdi Madubuike is still a "process."
There is plenty of excitement from the Baltimore Ravens team and organization, as defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike jogged out on the field for the team's first practice of training camp.
Madubuike was met with cheers and he even gave owner Steve Bisciotti a hug, which signaled plenty of energy. However, head coach Jesse Minter also confirmed that the defenders return to play is still a "process."
Following practice, Minter spoke to the media and was asked about Madubuike being ready to play at the start of the regular season.
"Yeah. Nnamdi has now passed the physical and come off of the PUP list. You know, it's look, it's still a process to get ready to play football and that's something we're going to work through over these next couple weeks. I think everybody has a good feeling about how he where he's at and where it's headed," Minter said.
This isn't the first time that Minter has brought up the return timeline for Madubuike. Earlier, before training camp began, the Baltimore head coach indicated that the defensive tackle was in a good spot, but linebacker Teddye Buchanan was "farther along."
Oddly enough, Buchanan remains on the PUP list while Madubuike has been removed.
Neck injuries can be very tricky, and Minter is seemingly tempering expectations to bring along the defensive tackler in the right manner.
"Yeah, I mean, I, you know, again like an individual coming off what he's coming off of our ability to get him ready for a long season um when he's had when he's gone through the things in the offseason that he's gone through. I think that is our job, you know, to protect the player and look out for the player. Um and so we'll try to do that to the best of our ability," Minter said.
Madubuike practiced and did some drills but it may be some time before he gets back into the full swing of things. His removal from the PUP list is an important step, but not the lone step the team needs to take.
As Minter pointed out, the Ravens need to get Madubuike ready for a long season, and that may include allowing him to slowly come back to playing fully.
Minter Offers Update on Calais Cambell
During practice, fellow defensive tackle Calais Campbell did not suit up, and Minter indicated it was due to the "personal tragedy" he has endured. That tragedy was the loss of his mother at the hands of his brother.
"He dealt with, you know, personal tragedy over the summer, and you know, so from a preparation standpoint, that, you know, took up a lot of his time and his mental focus and energy. Again, we're here for Kas to get ready at the rate that he can get ready at," Minter said.
Campbell is a consummate pro and a veteran who will undoubtedly help the Ravens in a major way. Minter has indicated that he will be given the time to deal with what he must and come back to playing at a pace is comfortable for him.
When that does occur, the Baltimore defense will have some big names back in the building. Campbell, Madubuike, and the addition of perennial pass rusher Trey Hendrickson will certainly impact the pass rush in a major way.
