Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle plans to add "stress" to the offense to ensure the players evolve.
The Baltimore Ravens have a new coaching staff in place, and there continues to be excitement surrounding offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. Doyle was in the same position with the Chicago Bears, with the difference being that head coach Ben Johnson called the plays.
Now, Doyle has the chance to run the Ravens offense the way he sees fit, and his tutelage is already making waves. On top of his impressions, he also spoke about his plans to "stress" the unit to ensure it evolves in 2026.
"We're giving these guys a lot intentionally, really trying to see what they can handle," Declan Doyle said following Tuesday's OTA practice. "It's something that I picked up in my time at previous spots."
Doyle is pointing to see how far the offense can be stretched, which is a good way to not only test veterans but also to see how the rookies can respond to stress. One such player who needs to feel the stress is offensive lineman Vega Ioane, who figures to be the most important first-year player heading into 2026.
Doyle expanded more on the idea of stressing the offense and what that can mold into.
"We could kind of take it easy and not stress these guys, and it would be a lot simpler. I think growth happens on the other side of stress, so we need to stress them ... We need to figure out what they can handle. Um, because you're trying to figure out, you know, how can you be the most difficult to defend. Um, and so we're trying to give them quite a bit," Doyle said.
Testing an offense early can be the quickest way to not only see what players have in them, but also to see where the unit as a whole is at in terms of chemistry and other factors. Doyle did say the communication with quarterback Lamar Jackson has been "great," and that relationship will matter a great deal in 2026.
Doyle's mind and the way he presents himself as a coach have already impressed many in the organization, including wide receiver Zay Flowers.
"He has stuff that I've never seen – plays and routes and stuff to help you get open," Flowers said. "He teaches you in a certain way where you remember the plays where there's not too much stress on you. But he gives you a lot, and he talks fast, too. I'm like, 'Hey, Coach, chill, chill.' He is a genius, though. I love it. We've been loving it so far."
Per the above video, Doyle does appear to speak very fast, which Flowers has to remind him to "chill." Still, the way that the coach is opening the offense for the receiver appears to have made a big impact.
Flowers ended the 2025 season with 1,211 yards and five touchdowns, and could take an even bigger leap under Doyle in 2026. He should be the next player in line for an extension, especially if he overperforms.
There are a lot of expectations for the Ravens in 2026, but the offense could take a major leap if Doyle continues to "stress" and force it to grow.
