With the news that Nnadmi Madubuike is set for a return in 2026, this will heavily impact the Baltimore Ravens' draft plans.
Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Nnamdi Maubuike underwent neck surgery, and the initial prognosis is that he will be able to play in 2026. There are no additional details on when he can return, but reports indicate he will resume play this season.
Considering his return is huge for the defense and the Ravens in general, the fact that the news was announced days before the draft means a lot. General manager Eric DeCosta and the front office may now see their draft board heavily impacted by the news of Madubuike.
To be fair, the Ravens organization may have already known this news, or at the very least, they may have known that there was a chance that the defensive tackle could make a return.
That said, the result after the surgery may not have been known. Considering the Ravens are now getting back one of their best players and their defensive standout, that could heavily impact their draft plans.
Drafting a Defensive Tackle
The Ravens may have already decided that they need to draft a defensive tackle. DeCosta did mention as much during his pre-draft press conference.
Missing Madubuike on the defensive line was clearly felt, as the team went from securing over 50 sacks in 2024 to just landing 30 sacks in 2025, putting them from the top of the list to 24th in the league.
Even with Madubuike returning, the Ravens may need to bolster the defensive line in a big way. Some mock drafts have the team selecting someone like Florida's Caleb Banks with the No. 45 overall pick.
With the return of Madubuike, the front office may not even have to draft a defensive tackle that far up, and they can prioritize a deeper need instead. Wide receiver, guard, and center are the top needs, and there is a growing consensus that the Ravens will use the No. 11 spot for one of those positions.
If that is the case, they may then use the No. 45 pick to again address their deeper needs.
Picking a defensive tackle or edge player later on could benefit the team a lot more than having to ensure they take a defensive tackle and skip another deeper need like center or guard.
Now, there will be a lot to say about when Madubuike will actually return. He underwent neck surgery, which may take months to recover from.
Should he be ready for the start of the regular season, that would be the best-case scenario, but recovery timetables can change depending on the given situation.
The Ravens clearly need more firepower on the defensive line, whether that is in the form of a tackle or edge player. Trey Hendrickson will not be enough, so the front office could be aiming to bring in more edge players instead of defensive tackles.
Madubuike's return could also provide the Ravens a far better cushion to see how the draft board shakes out, and they can remain far more patient in the later rounds to again address their bigger needs.
Time will tell what DeCosta and the front office plan to do, and the draft is right around the corner. Regardless, the Ravens got a huge boost with Madubuike set to make his return during the 2026 season.
