With quarterback Drake Maye heading with the New England Patriots to Super Bowl LX, he needed to be replaced on the Pro Bowl roster. Surprisingly, his replacement only appeared in eight NFL games as a rookie last season and wasn’t named as either a nominee or alternate. Despite that, Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders was named as Maye’s replacement in his first-ever Pro Bowl nod, Yahoo's Jordan Schultz first reported. It makes him the first fifth-round rookie to get the nod since Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua.
Sanders started the final seven games of the season for the Browns and completed 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven passing touchdowns and 10 interceptions, in addition to one rushing score. He led Cleveland to a 3-4 record as the starter. Sanders is the first Browns quarterback to make the Pro Bowl since Derek Anderson in 2008. The other QBs initially named from the AFC alongside Maye were Buffalo Bills' reigning MVP Josh Allen and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.
Here is the full story from Browns Roundtable writer Spencer German on Sanders getting the nod.
The Pro Bowl is entering its fourth year of a weeklong skills competition and flag football contest in replacement of the full-contact game in Hawaii that the NFL did away with. The contest will be held on Feb. 3 during Super Bowl week in San Francisco at 8 p.m. The coaches in the flag football game will be two Pro Hall of Hamers and San Francisco 49ers legends: Jerry Rice for the NFC, and Steve Young for the AFC.
