Should the Saints consider Anto Saka next offseason?

Texas A&M edge rusher Anto Saka is one of the most exciting defenders because of his unparalleled athleticism and high motor. He’s an enticing target for the New Orleans Saints in the 2027 NFL Draft and could be the explosive threat that Brandon Staley’s defensive line needs.

Before we begin, it's vital to note the goal of summer scouting. This article isn’t a finalized report on Anto Saka or a proclamation that the Saints must draft him. Plenty will change throughout the offseason; it’s far too soon for anything of that nature. Instead, it’s meant to identify him as a talented prospect who could make sense next April. Keep that in mind while reading this.

Saka, the six-foot-four, 254-pound senior, transferred to Texas A&M this offseason after spending the previous three years at Northwestern. In 2025, he totaled three sacks, four tackles for loss, and 30 pressures. Now, he’s primed for a breakout campaign in one of the nation’s most talented defenses.

Despite the limited production, Saka’s otherworldly athleticism makes him a high-upside prospect. He ranked No. 32 on Bruce Feldman’s Annual Freaks List (an article detailing college football’s most athletic players), and reportedly has a 370-pound bench press, 565-pound squat, and was clocked running 21.9 miles per hour this offseason.

For some prospects, elite testing numbers are just that: numbers on a report. However, Saka’s athleticism is on full display. He has an elite first step and consistently wins with speed around the edge. While he’s still developing as a run defender, Saka shows impressive strength for an undersized defensive lineman.

What separates Saka from the prototypical athletic edge rusher is his elite motor. He always plays through the whistle and doesn’t give up on a play. He’s excellent in pursuit and uses his aforementioned speed to chase down the quarterback. This ability also makes him a valuable asset in the fourth quarter who can make game-changing plays.

Saka is still a raw prospect who must develop a pass-rush arsenal before entering the NFL. He’s flashed violent hand usage and has shown a willingness to implement various moves. However, he relies on pure athleticism too often. Additionally, he needs to improve as a run defender, as he struggles to set the edge and anchor down against a bigger offensive lineman. Fixing these areas is the key to him becoming a highly sought-after prospect.

The Saints have been fortunate to have Cameron Jordan headline the defensive line for the past 15 years. Beyond him, they signed Chase Young, who has developed into a star, and Carl Granderson. However, Jordan is aging, and they lack depth after their big three. As a result, they must address the unit next offseason and could target Saka.

It’s still early, but Anto Saka is an intriguing prospect who pairs superb athleticism with a high motor. Don’t be surprised to hear his name floating around New Orleans next offseason.
