Bad, bad, bad, and bad.
That was a bad game. A very bad game. The New Orleans Saints, on such an emotional night, played flat-out bad. The defense was really struggling throughout this game, and that's not counting the injuries they had going into this matchup; it was even worse than expected. The pass defense was horrible, only getting incompletions on missed throws. Don't even get me started about the run defense, but I will talk about it with one of the players later. Then the offense, my goodness.
Let's just get to these disappointing performances from the Saints.
Danny Stutsman and Pete Werner
It was going to be a tough task from this LB room already with Kaden Elliss, but it was horrible. Werner just felt missing in this game, making little to no impact. Then for Stutsman, he was much more noticeable, but for only bad reasons. He was horrible against the run, like legitimately terrible. That's supposed to be his strenght on defense, but it's clear he’s nowhere near ready to start.
It's impossible to only blame these LBs for the run defense, because this defensive line was equally bad against the run, but it was glaring how much this team was missing Eliss.
The Pass Defense
Somehow, the Saints' pass defense was as bad as the run defense. Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley made Michael Penix’s job easy, and I don't remember one play that these two made in the air. This duo was one of the wildcards of the season because of how unproven they were, and it's looking like the Saints should have made an upgrade in this secondary, but they didn't. Also, Jonas Sanker struggled in coverage, which is also a consistent issue. Please put him back at safety.
The Offense and Kellen Moore
For this last section, I'm just going to talk about the entire offense and Moore. Yes, Tyler Shough, Chris Olave, and Devaugh Vele did well, as usual, but everything else was bad. The offensive line was horrible, the run game nonexistent, and the playcalling made no sense at times. Speaking of playcalling, this was one of the worst games from Moore. The team looked unprepared, somehow unmotivated, had costly penalties, and for some reason, Moore kept the starters in at the end of the game. This is when Olave suffered an injury. Also, not playing Isiah Stallbird at LB or CJ Donaldson at RB made little sense for this team.
If the Saints make a HC change, we will point at this game for being the reason.
