One of the New Orleans Saints' most talked-about positional needs is at running back, and given the offseason options, it's a good time to address it. Alvin Kamara is still on the roster, but there is no gaurentee he can improve from his down season last year. Besides him, the Saints have Kendre Miller, who is coming off a devastating injury and has constant injury issues, and Devin Neal, who did have some decent moments, but not enough to be an RB1.
If the Saints can fix the interior offensive line, which is vital to the running game's success, they may see some improvement in overall RB play, but getting a new franchise rusher would be an even better decision. New Orleans could go into the draft without siging a RB, but fixing it before could unlock more flexibility at 8.
One of the top available RB options in this free agency is New York Jets star Breece Hall. In the Saints' offense and as a long-term option, Hall was the perfect fit for New Orleans, but there is a reason I say 'was.'
At the NFL Combine, GMs and HCs have begun meeting with media. When speaking with the media, Jets GM Darren Mougey addressed the Hall situation and revealed that the team will have the star RB back this offseason. This could be done with a franchise tag or signing him to a long-term extension, but now moving forward, there is no expectation that Hall will hit the open market.
So, what now for the Saints?
This is a big hit for the Saints' potential offseason plans. Obviously, we did not know whether Hall would be targeted by Kellen Moore, but now we know that does not matter. The free-agent RB market is starting to get much thinner, but among the top-tier options, there are still two available. Kenneth Walker would be an excellent signing for the Saints, but he will be more expensive and is likely to return to the Seahawks. The other option is Travis Etienne Jr., which would be cheaper and still a great decision.
In the end, the next tier of free agents, Tyler Allgeier and Kenneth Gainwell, may actually be the better decision (at least in free agency). Yes, both players are not top-tier RB1s, but they are not too old and can step in if needed. Also, it sets up an opportunity to draft the next option left.
At 8, Jeremiyah Love is now fully on the table. Signing Walker or Etienne would change that, but they were less likely additions compared to Hall. Now, the Saints should go for Allgeier or Gainwell to set up the potential selection of Love. If Love is not available, or the Saints want to go with a different player, Allgeier or Gainwell added to a room with Kamara could be enough for 2026.
