Stagnant play-calling and costly penalties have New Orleans spiraling toward the NFC South basement, leaving veterans exasperated as the team struggles to find a winning identity.
Frustration is mounting after the New Orleans Saints suffered a third straight home loss on Sunday. They fell to the Vikings at home, 23-13.
Head coach Kellen Moore and veteran offensive lineman Erik McCoy are letting their thoughts be known on the difficult stretch that has seen New Orleans squander three home opportunities for wins. The frustration is evident.
John Sigler of Saints Wire is discussing the vibe around the organization after the three losses. Here's some of what Sigler had to say about the Saints' freefall to the bottom of the NFC South.
"He's exasperated. He should be. The offense has gotten worse week by week as opposing coaches key in on Moore's hesitance to change his approach and adapt to their counters. McCoy is one of the longest-tenured players on the team, and if Cameron Jordan and Alvin Kamara both move on next spring, the only player on the roster to have stuck with the Saints since their last playoff win would be long snapper Zach Wood. McCoy is one of the few guys who remembers what winning feels like.
How did they get into that long second down? Running back Kendre Miller was stopped for a loss of a yard, and then CJ Donaldson was fouled for holding in the backfield. Veteran left guard David Edwards drew a false start penalty. Now facing 2nd and 26, Moore had Shough take the snap out of shotgun and drop back five steps to make the distance needed even longer. Shough bailed out of the pocket, under pressure, and made a bad decision to put the ball in harm's way. Alvin Kamara was flagged for holding on the turnover but it didn't matter. It was just an ugly sequence from start to finish."

Mandatory Credit: Stephen Lew-Imagn ImagesTwo weeks ago, the Saints were tied for first place despite a 1-2 start to the year and an unforgivable loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Now they're 1-4 and tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for last place in the division. The Buccaneers won their first game on Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys.
Whatever is preventing the team for playing a complete game needs to be addressed, but the issue is that there's not a singular issue. When the Saints play well on offense, their defense no-shows. When they play well on defense, the offense and special teams commit turnovers.
The Saints will hope to put it all together before Week 5.
