Owner Gayle Benson demands accountability as a losing skid pushes the front office into a corner, forcing difficult personnel decisions during a high-stakes mid-season bye week.
The New Orleans Saints are feeling pressure from the front office. Saints owner Gayle Benson has made it clear that the team's performance level has not been acceptable in their losing skid.
In reality, the Saints may not have the talented depth to compete against the league's best, but that is not stopping them from facing heat for early losses.
Molly Bauer of the Who Dat Dish discussed the Saints owner's comments on the team and the accountability that could come with it. Here's what Bauer had to write about what Benson might have to do to back up her comments.
"It was just earlier this month that New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson said what she was seeing on the field was unacceptable and that she is committed to making the decisions necessary to improve the team. Since that statement, New Orleans has gone 1-1, nearly blowing a three-score lead in one and being shut out of three quarters in the other. Now entering the bye week, Benson has effectively backed herself into a corner and has to make some sort of move.
For the organization, this is the second straight season where they've started out 1-4. It's honestly a miracle that it's not complete chaos at this point, because the Saints haven't had worse back-to-back starts since 1996-1997, which was a whole other circus. With the standards of the Payton era set aside, a speech made just a few weeks ago has already lost its worth, and something has to change.
One caveat is that Benson never gave a specific deadline for when she needs to see the needed improvement, and Moore and Loomis have asked for patience. However, after the Saints put on two embarrassing performances back-to-back, the weight of the HC and GM's words might not mean much anymore."
We feel New Orleans has the potential at quarterback and receiver to become a dynamic offense. They have the pieces to be an effective defense. But potential means you just haven't done it yet. And until they do, the Saints are going to see plenty of scrutiny, fair and unfair.
Benson's comments likely come from the right place. Ultimately, she wants fans to know she wants to win as badly as they do. But the Saints cannot stand pat. They have to make adjustments.
We'll see what adjustments they make as they regroup in their bye week.
