The New Orleans Saints' quarterback situation is going to look different next season. Certainly, the team has its quarterback of the future it appears in starting quarterback Tyler Shough, but the rest of the quarterback room could look different.
Among the changes set to take place, there's a good chance that fellow Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler could be playing for a new team. Matt Sullivan of The Sporting News discussed why the potential move is not only possible but likely this offseason.
"With (Tyler) Shough taking over, the Saints now have an interesting decision with Spencer Rattler. According to ESPN, not only is Rattler a good trade target, but his 'Predicted chances of getting traded' this offseason are a significant 70%.
Trading Rattler, who is under contract for two more years on his rookie deal, would be a smart move for a team needing a solid backup quarterback. ...
Rattler is only 25 years old, has two more years of control at under $3 million total, and is coming off a solid year for the Saints. In eight starts, Rattler had a 67.7% completion rate with 1,586 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions."
New Orleans Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler (2) hands off to tight end Taysom Hill (7) against the New York Jets during the first half at Caesars Superdome. Stephen Lew-Imagn ImagesThat Rattler could be traded should be unsurprising to Saints fans. New Orleans stands to get value back from the promising quarterback and certainly has its own plans of building around another signal caller for the future. Even so, it's within reason another team could see Rattler as a potential quarterback of the future if they are not already settled at the position.
Add in teams that need quarterback depth and it's a recipe for a good trade being sent to New Orleans over the next few months.
The Saints could certainly benefit by retaining Rattler another season. Having two quarterbacks who can play at a high level safeguards against injury. Then again, with all the moves the team would like to make, moving on from Rattler could create some freedom to add another contributor elsewhere.
The Saints are not that far away from contending for their division and more in 2026. They proved as much with a strong end to last season winning four of their last five with Tyler Shough to end the season. Now they simply need to add the finishing pieces to secure a great season when they next take the field.
We'll monitor which moves the team is willing to make as the offseason progresses.
