Rookie QB, dominant run game, and turnover dominance are crucial. The Saints must execute these to secure a Week 10 victory.

The New Orleans Saints face the overachieving Carolina Panthers in Week 10. Despite their 5-4 record, the Panthers rank just No. 27 in points per game and No. 16 in points allowed. It is a winnable matchup for the Black & Gold, but several key factors will determine the outcome.

Help Your Rookie QB

The Saints recently made a change at quarterback, benching Spencer Rattler in favor of second-round rookie Tyler Shough. Shough’s first career start against the Rams could have gone better. He threw for one touchdown and one interception, was sacked three times, and posted a passer rating of 81.2.

The Panthers’ defense has shown improvements in recent weeks but still ranks No. 30 in PFF’s pass rush grade. This game is an ideal opportunity for Shough to settle in after facing the Rams’ relentless pass rush in his debut. The Saints must take advantage of Carolina’s weak pass rush and simplify the game plan for their new signal-caller. New Orleans must emphasize short and intermediate passes, establish proper protection schemes, and limit deep shots to build the rookie’s confidence.

Establish the Run / Control Time of Possession

The Saints enter Week 10 ranked No. 27 in rushing yards per game and last in time of possession. Carolina’s defensive front, anchored by Derrick Brown and A’Shawn Robinson, is one of its few bright spots and can make running the ball between the tackles a difficult task.

In order to find balance, the Saints must establish the run off the edge, sustain drives, and keep the Panthers’ defense on the field. If they fail to run the ball effectively, they will fall behind and be forced into predictable passing situations that could expose Shough behind a shaky offensive line.

Win the Turnover Battle

Despite the addition of Chase Young, the New Orleans defense has been less than stellar. The Saints rank near the bottom of the league in turnover differential at -4. The Panthers, however, also sit at -4. Bryce Young has thrown the sixth-most interceptions in the NFL this season and ranks No. 30 in passer rating among starting quarterbacks.

This matchup could come down to which team capitalizes on mistakes. If the Saints force turnovers, protect the football, and control the clock, they will have a strong chance to head into their bye week with momentum, and their second win of the season.
