Should the Saints select Caleb Downs in the 2026 NFL Draft?
Ohio State safety Caleb Downs is an underrated option at pick eight for the New Orleans Saints. He’s one of the premier players in the 2026 NFL Draft and should be a top pick in April. The mental component to Downs’ game is apparent, but so is the physical aspect. He flies downhill to defend the run and isn’t afraid of contact, rather seeking it. He’s a spectacular tackler and consistently brings down opposing players. He reads blocks well and navigates through traffic to reach the ball carrier.
In coverage, he’s equally as impressive. Downs is a fluid athlete and can match up against opposing running backs or tight ends in man coverage. He’s stellar in zone coverage and locks up whatever spot he’s covering. He’s able to roam deep and has the range to reach nearly everywhere on the field.
Downs is one of the top prospects in the NFL Draft, but still isn’t perfect. His sub-six-foot frame and non-elite straight line speed makes some teams question his ability to play all over the defense. This concern is valid, but the Saints haven’t been afraid of small safeties in recent memory (Tyrann Mathieu).
