It was a weakness last year, and an even bigger issue now.

Although volatile, the New Orleans Saints' defense, with DC Brandon Staley at the helm, actually had a really good year. The DBs made big plays and became more consistent; tackling improved throughout the season; Demario Davis commanded the LB room; the run defense held its own; and the defensive line had good sack production.

If any Saints fan were told back in Week 5 that the defense would end up being as good as it was, they would never believe you. This was because EDGE Chase Young was still out with an injury, and the defense could not consistently get to the QB. Once Young returned, everything began to turn around because he is that good. The pass rush was way better, which opened up opportunities for Carl Granderson and Cam Jordan to produce at a high level.

Now in free agency, I believe Young's impact has made people forget how bad it was without him, which is worrying because he has dealt with injuries throughout his career. Also, when Young was off the field throughout games, the pass rush allowed the opposing QB way too much time in the pocket. This was a clear representation of why the Saints need to upgrade the depth as well.

Speaking of free agency, Jordan is also still on the open market, so the starting pass rush is worse as well. Most of the focus has been on upgrading WR2, which is very much a need, but the EDGE room and WR room are in similar spots. Young and Chris Olave are both game changers, but dealt with injuries. Also, Granderson is similar to Devaughn Vele: they may be a below-average second option but a good third option.

So, adding at least two more pass rushers this offseason needs to be not just a goal, but a must. This can be done in the draft, but New Orleans should look at free agency first. Getting a veteran guy that can start right away will allow the Saints some flexibility in the draft, just in case the guys they want do not drop to their selections. Also, if the Saints do draft a pass-rush prospect in the first three rounds, that player can start right away, while that veteran would drop to the second unit, thereby improving depth.
