The writing may be on the wall.
The New Orleans Saints have worked hard to search out and bring in new players that upgrades spots throughout the roster. It has been a transformative offseason for the Saints, and after having a really good end to the year, taking that next step in 2026 is no longer a hope, it's an expectation. The offense is completely built around Tyler Shough, and although it is only his second year in the NFL, the Saints have said it's now or never to prove that you can lead this offense.
On defense, there has not been as much investment as on the offensive side of the ball, but there have been good additions. One of the main parts of the defense that has seen new players get added is the defensive line.
It makes sense why the Saints are doing this. Yes, the pass rush actually had pretty good production, but the numbers hid an issue. It was clear that when Chase Young was not on the field, the defensive line really struggled to get any pressure. The run defense was also still an issue, and although it improved, there were many moments throughout the season when teams could just run over the defense.
Clearly, the defensive line needed improvement, and the Saints went into this offseason with that goal. The other issue that made it even more of a challenge was that Saints legend Cam Jordan was set to leave in free agency. Jordan just had a really good season, but the Saints were having a youth movement in their organization. A return would have to be for the right price.
That return never happened, and the Saints' additions since free agency have made it an even longer shot for Jordan to return to the team. During the draft, the Saints traded for former first-round pick EDGE Tyree Wilson and selected DT Christen Miller, then after, signed EDGE Michael Heldman (UDFA), DT Zxavian Harris (UDFA), and EDGE Anfernee Jennings. All of these players have a good chance of making the roster, which would mean the room is very full, and unlike last season, Cam Jordan's spot is not solidified.
There is absolutely no reason Jordan would want to come back if he has to compete, especially if the contract isn't what he wants. The other factor is the Super Bowl, and Jordan may want to find another home to try to complete that goal.
