The Saints have a decision to make.

The New Orleans Saints opened up the preseason with a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. With the Saints resting their starters, the goal is to escape without injuries and to evaluate the players fighting for a roster spot.

Tyler Shough is the toast of the town and with good reason. Spencer Rattler started the game against the Jaguars as he did the 2025 season for the Saints. However, a former top two draft pick shined on Saturday.

Every team will carry three quarterbacks given the issues with the 49ers in the NFC Championship in 2022 against the Eagles. But the Saints should seriously look at moving Rattler for a draft pick.

Zach Wilson is the perfect backup quarterback. Toolsy, probably shouldn't take too many snaps, but can win you a game or two in a pinch. His performance on Saturday only furthered that opinion on the former BYU QB.

To be clear, Wilson wasn't perfect. However, he made more plays than Rattler. To put it another way, it's far more likely teams will look to acquire Rattler over Wilson. Yes, Wilson has some fun attributes, but Rattler has shown a bit more consistency as a starter. Either way, if a team is looking at both quarterbacks, you are taking a risk.

The reason I choose Wilson over Rattler is simply athletic based. Now, why would a team choose Wilson over Rattler? Good question. Simply put, first round quarterbacks get three and four chances in the NFL. Think Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, both were in the same draft class.

What would the draft compensation look like? You're likely gaining a late, late round pick for either at this point. Now, the risk of giving up a capable quarterback cannot be dismissed.

The Saints are a team with playoff aspirations. Ideally, you don't want your starting quarterback to go down in any capacity. Also, planning for an injury is almost impossible. Unfortunately, the NFL has told you what they think of Wilson given that the Saints added him as a third QB on the roster.

The question becomes: which QB would NFL teams desire? The toolsy, first round QB or the guy who has played in the NFL as a starter recently?
