Add it to a long list for New Orleans.
The New Orleans made some big moves in free agency, and one of their top signings was bringing back LB Kaden Elliss. With the division rival Atlanta Falcons, Elliss developed at LB, improving his pass coverage and continuing to excel at rushing the passer or stopping the run. After losing Demario Davis to the New York Jets, which was a massive hit to the defense, the Saints needed to add an LB to somehow replace what the former veteran brought to the team, and Elliss should be that.
Bringing up Elliss pass rush again, in Brandon Staley's scheme, Elliss may actually be used as an OLB pass rusher a good amount. It probably won't be his primary position, but the fact that he would be moving around much more means the Saints need to have at least two more LB options behind him.
So, now looking at the depth, that is where the issues arise. Pete Werner is a solid LB on this defense, but unless he can address last season's run defense issues, he will be exposed when offenses target him. It was a major issue at the beginning of the season, and the more games that happened, the fewer snaps he had. His reps were being taken by then-rookie Danny Stutsman and former UDFA Isaiah Stalbird.
Stutsman and Stalbird had some excellent moments, and although more development needs to happen for each, there were signs that made you feel decent about their future. Still, relying on those two to potentially start with Werner, who has had snaps taken away from him, is nowhere near solid enough to last next season.
The potential instability that can come when Elliss moves to OLB should force the Saints to look at LB in the 2026 NFL Draft.
At pick 8, the dream for the LB position would be Ohio State's Sonny Styles, but he is likely to go before the Saints' selection, and other positions may be more valued by the team. On day 2, it is also likely that LB is moved to the back of positional priority when considering the Saints' two selections, so day 3 is the likely place the Saints can find one.
If the Saints can repeat last year's luck (or skill) of getting Stutsman on day 3, that would do wonders for the LB depth. Some options that stand out are Bryce Boettcher, Kaleb Elarms-Orr, and Deontae Lawson.
