No need to rush the process.
Every 2026 pick the New Orleans Saints own can be utilized on whichever prospect is the best available at that time. Need will undoubtably creep in, and at times, both factors will combine to make an obvious option in the selection. For example, one of the Saints' top needs is EDGE, and if Rueben Bain Jr. is available at 8, it may not matter if they have safety Caleb Downs ranked higher, because Bain Jr. is the best available player who fits a major need.
The Saints won't be forced to make any selections in this draft, but the need will still be considered. When the first major positions, like EDGE and WR, are addressed, the second wave of needs will be in mind: RG, CB, DT, C, LB, and RB. If the Saints come away from the draft without adressing some of the positions in the second wave, that's fine, but getting most of them fixed would be great. 'Looking at that list again, RB is the one that can be taken off.
Last season, the running game was bad for many reasons, but instead of harping on the past, the Saints are focused on the future. Travis Etienne was signed to be the RB1 in New Orleans, and bringing in David Edwards as well will make the entire run game better next season.
Still, RB2 is an interesting spot because Alvin Kamara's time in the NFL is nearing its end, and the rest of the group are unproven commodities. Throughout this draft process, the Saints have shown interest in RB prospects, which is perfectly fine, but the only reason to draft one before round 5 is if someone is dropping.
There is absolutely no reason to force getting an RB, and if you have to go into next season with Etienne RB1, Kamara RB2, Devin Neal/Kendre Miller/Audric Estime RB3, and whoever RB4, that is a good room. It's not spectacular, but there is some potential in the room's depth. Maybe the best thing for Kamara's career at this point is the lower snap count.
The other factor is the 2027 Draft. Most of the focus has been on the QBs in that draft, but the RBs are also spectacular. There's no Jeremiyah Love, but depth-wise, there are going to be some great options that the Saints can select in the second round and have their heir apparent to Etienne. Combining that with this year's class being weaker, it may be better to just wait until Kamara is off the roster, and you have more conclusions with the rest of the RB room.
