Getting starters in the NFL Draft is easier said than done. Yes, the New Orleans Saints were able to get a number of them last year, but for the most part, draft classes do not get to that level of success.
Where getting a starter really matters is in the later rounds, because if a team can do that, the rest of the draft class tends to look much better, and the value is excellent. This year's draft may not have the top-end talent of past years, but it does have some great depth. Although we may not know if they will succeed in the NFL, it's always fun to guess who could be the day 3 gems.
Although the hype around this player has dropped since the Senior Bowl, Tyren Montgomery still needs to be mentioned in these conversations. The John Caroll WR was an unknown commodity entering Senior Bowl week, but after the Senior Bowl, scouts around the NFL knew who he was. Montgomery was making big play after big play and looked like one of the best WRs at the event. Although he had some worse plays near the end of the Senior Bowl, his earlier days were enough for people to keep him in the back of their minds. For the Saints, he would be an excellent depth WR option with potential. He wouldn't be a starter right away, but on special teams, he could be a contributor and enter the WR battle in training camp.
Here is another Senior Bowl prospect, but personally, I was high on him even before the event. Arkansas DT Cameron Ball is a massive human being at 6-foot-3, 310 lbs, and 33-inch arms. Ball is a great run defender who can absolutely blow up plays. He is sneaky athletic and has a burst of speed that catches offensive players by surprise. At the Senior Bowl, Ball had some very nice wins in the 1v1 drills, but he did not make the splash impact that someone like Lee Hunter made. This should allow him to be available on day 3.
For the last prospect, there is a chance he doesn't make it to day 3, but if he does, he'll be a steal. Ohio State TE Max Klare did not make a massive/dominant impact in the offense last season, but when he did, the talent was clear. Klare is a very good recieving threat, and after the catch, he makes big plays happen. Blocking needs to be better, but the receiving upside he has makes him a really good TE2 option for the Saints.
