The Senior Bowl is nearing its end, and with a good amount of tape from these players, the WRs are having a great week. Some players have completely burst onto the scene and had massive boosts to their draft stock. For the New Orleans Saints, that is excellent news due to their current need at WR.
Here are some Senior Bowl WR options for the Saints:
Out of all the WRs I will talk about, Josh Cameron plays completely differently. He sometimes struggles to get separation from CBs, and he does not have great speed, but he is the definition of a strong WR. At 6-foot-1, 223 pounds, Cameron is excellent at boxing out corners to make the catch, fighting through heavy contact to secure the ball, and can track the ball in the air and adjust. He also uses his hands really well to create some space from the CB without drawing a flag.
Someone I was a big fan of going into the Senior Bowl was Malachi Fields, and he did enough to warrant my excitement for what he could do in the NFL. Fields made one of the best plays of the week on a big throw by Arkansas QB Taylen Green. He is a big-play machine who makes the most difficult catches look easy, excels in contested-catch situations, and can win with speed.
Now, getting to the smaller school guys, we have our first: Ted Hurst. In the build-up to the Senior Bowl, Hurts was a WR I was not familiar with, but I wanted to watch some of his film to prepare. As soon as I put it on, I was intrigued. Hurts brings an excellent mix of speed, playmaking after the catch, and contested-catch ability. An obvious worry was whether he could do it against better competition, and in the Senior Bowl, that could be answered. Well, he didn't just do it; he was a standout all week.
On the flip side of familiarity, coming into Senior Bowl week, I had no clue who Tyren Montgomery was, and I wasn't alone, but I do now. The John Carroll WR had an excellent first day, stamping his name in the minds of NFL scouts. His last day of practice wasn't his best, and he still struggles in contested situations, but what he showed throughout the week was enough to make him an early Day 3 selection.
