At 4–10, the New Orleans Saints are effectively no longer competing for a playoff spot. However, the team has built real momentum with a two-game win streak entering this Sunday and that matters, even if the postseason math doesn’t. The Saints’ next three games are against the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons, which is about as favorable as you can ask for this late in the year. New Orleans should be favored in both the Jets and Titans contests, and if they take care of business, the season finale suddenly has real upside.
There's a very real scenario in which the Saints could head into that last game against the Falcons on a four-game win streak with a chance to win seven games, which sounded impossible not that long ago. Draft positioning is incredibly important, and the Saints could really use a top pick, no question. But there’s also something special about carrying momentum into the next season, especially for a team that has spent most of the year searching for any kind of identity or consistency.
If the Saints can win five in a row to close out the year, or even win four of their last five games, there’s a lot to be optimistic about. That type of finish changes the way the locker room feels heading into the offseason, and it changes the way the front office evaluates what it already has. It’s not just about a record at that point, it’s about proof of concept.
And the biggest storyline is still quarterback. If Tyler Shough plays well in his last three games, he may, in fact, be the quarterback of the future in New Orleans. There’s a lot to learn about this team in the next three games, but their favorable schedule certainly makes the season interesting. The Saints only had two wins just a few weeks ago. They could somehow turn this around and end up with seven, and at this point, it wouldn’t be all that surprising.
