Should the Saints consider Ben Roberts next offseason?

It’s only July, but it’s never too soon to begin scouting for the 2027 NFL Draft. One prospect that the New Orleans Saints should look out for is Texas Tech linebacker Ben Roberts.

It’s important to note the intention of summer scouting before diving into Ben Roberts’ scouting report. This isn’t a finalized grade saying that he’s a perfect prospect and someone the Saints must draft. Instead, it’s meant to highlight his strengths and show fans a potential player that could resurface next April.

Having said that, Roberts is a highly instinctual prospect who can shut down his competition in coverage and eliminate the run. The-six-foot-three, 240-pound redshirt senior has been hidden behind other elite Texas Tech linebackers, but has steadily improved and is primed to be a premier player in the nation.

Roberts thrives in zone coverage and consistently eliminates his area from the field. He’s always surveying the quarterback’s eyes and has an excellent feel for receivers passing by. Once he sees an indication, he immediately breaks on the ball and makes his presence known. He’s not quite as comfortable in man coverage, as he struggles against shifty, quick tight ends, but the potential to develop that is clear.

As a run defender, Roberts is reliable and understands his role. He efficiently navigates through traffic and fills his gap. Once he makes contact, it’s difficult for the ball carrier to escape as he pairs elite technique with staggering power. Additionally, he’s able to battle against opposing linemen and can maintain his positioning.

Beyond this, Roberts has a knack for turnovers. He tallied an impressive four interceptions last year and has forced seven fumbles in his career. This is largely due to his aforementioned instincts. He’s always in the right position and is seeking to make a game-changing play.

Roberts’ talent is evident, but the fit is also intriguing for the Saints. Their linebacker room is questionable after veteran Demario Davis departed to the New York Jets last offseason. Pete Werner has been a consistent contributor, but he’s never taken the step towards stardom. Additionally, they have young talent, with Danny Stutsman, Isaiah Stalbird, and Jaylan Ford, but they are all unproven. So, investing significant draft capital in the position would be wise if it doesn’t improve next year.

It’s still far too early to say anything definitive, but Ben Roberts is already emerging as a top linebacker prospect in the 2027 NFL Draft. His superb instincts, ability in coverage, and prowess against the run make him a potential option that Saints’ fans must watch throughout the upcoming college football season.
