Who should the Saints select in the first-round of the NFL Draft?
The options at pick eight are becoming clear for the New Orleans Saints in the 2026 NFL Draft. There still isn’t a clear answer, but the potential group is evident. Because of this, fans should begin to get accustomed to each prospect. To help with that, here are the top five options for the Saints in round one.
It’s important to note that this is a realistic list. Arvell Reese and Jeremiyah Love would’ve both been included, but it’s highly unlikely they will be available at pick eight. This list is purely what the Saints could see and their potential board.
An honorable mention goes to Makai Lemon. The top prospects at wide receiver are all close, but Lemon just missed the cut. Regardless, he’s worth mentioning and an enticing option for the Saints.
1. Sonny Styles
Linebacker is a major need after the departure of Demario Davis. His ability on the field and leadership in the locker room were invaluable. Now, the Saints need to find his replacement, which is why Sonny Styles is the perfect option. He’s a well-rounded player whose athleticism and technique let him impact each play.
2. Rueben Bain Jr.
Don’t let prospect fatigue sway your opinion. Rueben Bain is an elite option for the Saints despite his subpar arm length. They still haven’t addressed edge rusher this offseason, and could fix that with the addition of Bain. He’s a triple-threat pass rusher, meaning he can win with speed, power, and technique. Additionally, he’s a dominating force against the run. What else could be expected from a prospect?
3. Caleb Downs
Caleb Downs’ versatility and IQ make him a premier prospect. He’s logged snaps as a free safety, in the box, as a linebacker, in the slot, and on the defensive line. This is possible because of his mental processing, which helps him know everyone's responsibilities on the field. Downs could help fill the void left by Alontae Taylor and be the franchise cornerstone on defense. Just think about it, it takes a special player to start on Nick Saban’s defense as a true freshman. That’s the type of presence the Saints need on defense.
4. Jordyn Tyson
Yes, I know. Jordyn Tyson has suffered many injuries in his collegiate career. This is definitely concerning, but his unparalleled route-running, athleticism, and nuance make him a potential game-changer. This is undoubtedly the riskiest pick on the list, but it would take the Saints offense to another dimension if it works out.
5. Carnell Tate
Can an NFL team ever go wrong with picking an Ohio State receiver? Beyond that, his ability and cohesion on the Saints' offense make Tate an enticing option. His prowess in contested catch situations, outstanding hands, and impressive route running make him a first-round pick, but his fit in the Saints offense makes him tempting. Tyler Shough and Tate have each stated their desires to pair up with each other, and the Saints should consider making it happen.
