Should the New Orleans Saints Trade for WR George Pickens? cover image

With the Saints needing to find a WR, could the Dallas Cowboys star be an option

Wide receiver is one of the New Orleans Saints' biggest needs this offseason, and the good news is they have some different areas to find an answer. Looking at the current roster, Chris Olave is the clear #1 option, and he should be.

Finally, having a nearly full healthy year, Olave was able to show why he can absolutely take over an offense and make big plays that elevate the team. This was also the first time we really saw Olave reach the potential that many believed he had. Defenses could not defend him.

Now, with a contract extension expected to happen, Olave will still need to keep up that excellent play, but injuries are always going to be at the back of people's minds. Yes, he was mostly healthy last season, but that needs to be shown again to really feel comfortable about his future. Without a current WR2 (Devaughn Vele should be WR3), the Saints do not have enough. top-end talent in the room, and if Olave does get injured, the pass offense could be heavily affected.

The Saints must hit on a talented WR2 that can be a borderline WR1 on any day. This should be similar to what the Cincinnati Bengals have, but the Saints will have a better offensive line. Quickly, especially if Tyler Shough keeps playing well and improves, the offense could be near the top in the NFL, but again, they still need to find that WR.

One option that is not from free agency or the draft is a player who just hit the trade market. WR George Pickens from the Dallas Cowboys was supposed to be a free agent this offseason, but the Cowboys decided to franchise tag him. It made sense why the team wanted to bring back Pickens after trading for him last offseason. He had an excellent year and was an excellent complement to CeeDee Lamb. Still, it seems the WR is on the market, so should the Saints do it?

Looking at all the factors, no. Pickens has always had some character concerns, and although it has been less evident with the Cowboys, you never know if he will leave for another team. The other issue is contract extension and draft-pick compensation. Pickens is worth a second-round pick, and the Saints would have to extend him to an expensive contract. Having two big WR contracts is fine while having a QB on a rookie deal, but the money should go elsewhere.
