The New Orleans Saints Could Find Their WR2 in Free Agency cover image

Of all the options, one stands out from the rest, but is it worth it?

The WR conversation has been a major one around the New Orleans Saints roster because it's such a clear issue. Chris Olave is the WR1 and will be extended, but has been inconsistent at times, and injuries are always a conversation that must come up when discussing the star receiver. Devaughn Vele started slow, but he really came into his own in Kellen Moore's offense, and he may be Tyler Shough's favorite target. The issue is that he finished the season injured, and eventhough he has only played two seasons in the NFL, Vele is already 28.

Besides those two, who are the main starters, the Saints actually have pretty good depth, but another starter is currently missing. Moore should be very aware of this, and getting more weapons to put around Shough should be a priority. It then comes down to whether the Saints should find that player in free agency or the NFL Draft.

There are good arguments for both sides. In the draft, there are some great options throughout, but it may be better to fix it through free agency so the Saints can have as much flexibility as possible. On the other side, New Orleans is already going to be paying Olave, so is it worth it to also pay for an expensive WR2? Well, this would come down to the player.

Two options that the Saints could have major interest in are Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman and Green Bay Packers WR Romeo Doubs. Pittman is not on the market yet, but is very likely due to the Colts prioritizing Alec Pierce. As a fit for the Saints, he is a contested-catch WR who can make impossible plays look easy and can threaten deep. He would be a great compliment to Olave, but his game is very similar to Vele's. Also, he is 28, so this really wouldn't be a long-term move.

That leaves Doubs. At 6-foot-2, Doubs is almost like the perfect in between of Vele and Olave. He has the speed and route-running, while also adjusting well to passes and making some contested grabs. After the catch is where he separates himself from the Saints' two starting WRs. Once he has the ball in his hands, he can speed past defenders and make them miss. Another positive is that Doubs should not be too expensive, which, with Olave's contract in mind, would be important.
