With options aplenty at pick 8, the Saints have options, but preparing for one position may be the best one.

NFL Draft and Free Agency talk is rampant among all fans around the league, and it's a very exciting time of the year. People are beginning to look at perfect fits for rosters, and rumors are spreading about teams being interested in certain players. For the New Orleans Saints, running backs, wide receivers, and interior offensive line have been the positions talked about in both the draft and free agency.

During QB Tyler Shough's emergence as a potential franchise QB, he was able to overcome all the issues at WR and the horrible run game the Saints tried to use each game. This is not sustainable, so HC Kellen Moore needs to prioritize fixing that over everything.

With the Saints able to spend money in this free agency window, many expect them to go out and address some of their less exciting positions of need, then go BPA at #8 in the draft to find a weapon on offense/defense. This is a great plan, but a better one exists that could set the Saints up to make a massive step forward next season.

The New Orleans Saints' Ideal Offseason Plan

Entering free agency, the Saints' current needs are interior O-line, WR, RB, TE, CB, LB, EDGE, DT, and punter/kicker. That's an egregious number of positions to fill, but this team can fix many of them in free agency. The interior O-line, WR, and RB needs are the most glaring and must be prioritized over the others, but a question still remains: What should be targeted in free agency, and what should be left for the draft?

The Saints should do everything in their power to fix the interior offensive line in free agency first. At least, a certified starter must be signed, and if they want to go with a cheaper option, then draft a developmental backup, which would be excellent. Next in free agency would be RB.

Yes, Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love being the pick at 8 is nearly every single Saints fan's (including myself) dream, but what if he is not available? Draft night is a crazy time, and unexpected picks/trades happen. There is nowhere near a guarantee he will be available at 8, so investing in an RB1 from free agency would be the better choice. It guarantees a fix rather than risking it.

That would leave WR, and for this position, there is absolutely no reason to target it in free agency.

Out of all the positions of need, WR is the only near gaurentee for pick 8. WRs Makai Lemon, Carnell Tate, and Jordyn Tyson are potential options for the Saints at 8, and although they may not all be available, one is going to be. If the Saints can attempt to fix everything else in free agency and leave WR as the main need left, New Orleans can basically guarantee they find that answer in the first round.

A potential free agency class with LG David Edwards, RG Alijah Vera Tucker, and RB Breece Hall, then a draft class with WR Makai Lemon headlining it, would catapult the Saints offense to another level.
