It's going to be a long offseason.

Entering the 2026 season, the New Orleans Saints had an upgraded roster, but some issues still existed. There was hope that those positions would have some players step up and show signs of development, but instead, that didn't happen. What has made things even worse is that the positions many felt good about have also underperformed. It's an unfortunate situation for this team to be in, and although a potential future coaching staff or new position coaches could get better performances out of this group, glaring improvements must be made.

Here are the positions New Orleans can not avoid upgrading in 2027:

Offense

RB - it's insane that I even have to talk about the running back group, but here we are. Hopefully either Kellen Moore or a new coach can figure out a fix for the run game, but even if that happens, a new addition must be made. With a healthy Travis Etienne in mind, the Saints need to find a physical running back that can complement his game.

RG - The offensive line has been abysmal in 2026, and although everyone can be blamed, the RG spot is the only realistic position where an upgrade can be made this offseason. Ruiz has not been the main reason for the struggles. He has had some nice moments, but he is too inconsistent.

Defense (get ready!)

DT - The young DTs on the roster have been able to make some plays throughout the season, and it should make the Saints feel better about their depth, but they need to get a high-level DT to put next to Christian Miller.

EDGE - Carl Granderson has been a decent player to put opposite Chase Young, especially due to his impact against the run, but the Saints can't survive another season with this duo. It's clear that the Saints are missing pass rush behind Young, so adding someone who can help with that would improve the entire defense.

LB - Kaden Elliss is clearly still very good, but the injuries have exposed an issue. The Saints need to upgrade their depth and the starting spot next to Elliss.

DBs - Besides EDGE, the Saints need to address their cornerback and safety room this offseason. Justin Ried and Julian Blackmon have been disappointing, while QBs are attacking Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley. Jonas Sanker is the only standout from this group, but he's struggling after moving to slot.
