Don't be surprised to hear Barion Brown's name in his rookie year.

On the surface, New Orleans Saints' sixth-round pick Barion Brown is buried in a crowded receiver room; however, he’s in line to make a major impact in his rookie season. Brown’s prowess on special teams and his explosiveness after the catch make him a dangerous weapon who could make headlines in 2026.

To start, Brown will likely be utilized exclusively on special teams as a kick and punt returner. This is where he thrived in college, grabbing six touchdowns and 1,983 total yards. Additionally, the Saints lost their special teams ace, Rashid Shaheed, at the trade deadline last year, so the spot is open.

With the recent changes to kickoffs, having an explosive option is necessary. Because of this, the Saints suffered late last year when they lacked that dangerous option. As a result, Brown already has almost “locked up” a roster spot because of this role. That will be his position now, but it could grow further into his career.

Although they are different players, Shaheed and Brown could have a similar career path. The veteran was originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and only saw snaps on special teams. However, as he proved his explosiveness returning kicks, he slowly earned opportunities on offense. Soon after, he became a dynamic, big-play threat because of his elite speed and agility.

It’s not irrational to think that Brown can follow this. The former LSU Tiger has blazing speed and rapid short-area quickness that make him a weapon for Kellen Moore’s offense. He’s not a great route runner, which is why he won’t contribute early in his career, but he could carve out a role with designed manufactured touches.

Luckily for Brown, the Saints also need this type of player. Chris Olave and Jordyn Tyson will likely avoid this area because of injury concerns, and Devaughn Vele simply isn't a dynamic option after the catch. So, Brown could be the option if Moore opts to call a wide receiver screen. This is how he will impact the offense early in his career before developing his route running and becoming an every-down contributor.

With this in mind, fans should expect to hear Barion Brown’s name in 2026. He won’t ever be a 1,000-yard receiver and likely won’t play a major role on offense in his rookie season outside of manufactured touches, but his prowess on special teams carves out an important role for him. Don’t be shocked to see Brown play a deciding role for the Saints.
