The 2026 NFL Scouting Combine is officially upon us. One of the most important parts about this event is the opportunity to hold formal interviews with prospects. The New Orleans Saints have already taken advantage of this by meeting with Oklahoma edge rusher R Mason Thomas. The former Sooner is undersized, but compensates for it with his explosiveness. He would be a perfect pairing for the Saints defensive line opposite of Chase Young.
The Saints need to address the defensive line this season. Young is a star; he was exceptional in 2025 with 10 sacks and 49 pressures in 12 games played. He’s established himself as a franchise cornerstone, but they are lacking depth behind him. Cam Jordan and Carl Granderson each impressed last season, but their future in the black and gold is uncertain. This is why adding a dynamic edge rusher this offseason is pivotal, and Thomas would be an ideal fit.
It’s important to note that Thomas isn’t a three-down player. He plays with great leverage, which helps lessen the power discrepancy between him (6-foot-1, 249 pounds) and a much larger offensive lineman. However, he still is outmatched and can get removed from plays if a lineman reaches his chest. This will force him to be a designated pass rusher in the NFL. This is a needed role, but it will likely push him to be selected on day two.
Regardless of this, Thomas would be an excellent addition to the Saints’ defensive line. His calling card is his elite first step and ability to win around the edge. He has outstanding flexibility and can frequently dip under the outside shoulder of the lineman. He’s a constant threat to the quarterback and forces them to step up, oftentimes into other pass rushers.
Additionally, Thomas converts speed to power well. Despite being undersized, he can reach the lineman’s chest and push him back into the quarterback. He combines this with a full toolbox of pass rush moves to become a nightmare for the offense. His refinement as an edge rusher will help ease the transition to the NFL and allow him to impact the game in his rookie season.
Overall, R Mason Thomas is a flawed prospect in the run game, but his prowess as a pass rusher makes him an enticing option for the Saints. There’s obviously mutual interest, as New Orleans held a formal interview with him. Thomas would instantly elevate their pass rush and should be in consideration for a day two selection.
