Should the Saints consider Colin Simmons in the 2027 NFL Draft?
ESPN writer Jordan Reid released his latest 2027 NFL Mock Draft on Thursday, August 27, where the New Orleans Saints found Cameron Jordan’s successor in Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons.
First off, it’s important to remember the purpose of preseason mock drafts. This isn’t meant to predict the draft; it’s far too early for that, as plenty will change before April. Instead, it’s supposed to familiarize fans with top prospects and give them players to watch throughout the season.
That said, Reid notes how Simmons is arguably the top defender in the nation after an impressive 2025 campaign.
“Simmons would be a major boost to New Orleans' defensive front as the most productive edge rusher in this class. He led the SEC with 12 sacks last season, and the 6-foot-3, 245-pounder is a terror with an unpredictable assortment of pass-rush moves,” Reid wrote. “His combination of power and upfield quickness has him in the argument with Dylan Stewart as the top edge in this draft.”
As Reid highlights, Simmons is a well-rounded prospect who pairs staggering strength with impressive agility. He has an absurd first step that instantly threatens the opposing offensive linemen. His violent hand usage lets him consistently stack and shed his competition. Additionally, his excellent leverage helps him dominate the point of attack, bullying his matchup against the run and as a pass rusher.
Beyond this, Simmons is a high-IQ player who understands how to set the edge against the run. He doesn’t fall for read options and maintains elite positioning.
An underrated aspect of Simmons' game is his comfort in coverage. He’s a smooth mover and can drop back into coverage when asked. This makes him a defensive coordinator’s dream, as he’s a versatile chess piece they can scheme up countless uses for.
The main question surrounding Simmons is whether he can hold up against NFL-level strength at the offensive line. He dominates college, including SEC competition, but he’s a tad undersized for the NFL and has struggled in certain matchups, particularly against the run. Dominating these matchups is the key to establishing himself as a top-10 selection.
These traits should interest the Saints, who need an edge rusher. Cameron Jordan, while still productive, isn’t getting any younger. As a result, Brandon Staley must find his successor and give Chase Young an explosive complement for years to come. It’s a unit they must address next offseason, and Colin Simmons will be a top option in the NFL Draft.
