There's never a bad time for a mock draft.
Both the NFL and college football seasons are underway, making it a perfect time for a three-round New Orleans Saints mock draft. In this instance, Brandon Staley bolsters his defense while Kellen Moore finds Alvin Kamara’s potential successor.
Obviously, it’s far too early for this to be accurate. We’re gaining clarity, but numerous things will change throughout the year, making it irrational to try to predict. However, it’s still a valuable exercise to highlight elite performances and introduce fans to talented prospects.
With that in mind, let’s dive into a three-round Saints mock draft.
Round 1: Ellis Robinson IV: CB, Georgia
Ellis Robinson hasn’t faced top-tier competition yet, playing Tennessee State and Western Kentucky, but he’s been stellar so far. The six-foot, 180-pound junior pairs excellent athleticism with amazing ball skills. He must be more consistent in coverage, but Robinson has the makings of a lockdown cornerback in the NFL.
Kool-Aid McKinstry was great for the Saints in week one. However, Martin Emerson Jr. and Quincy Riley, while still serviceable, were targeted and gave up some explosive plays. If this continues, Brandon Staley will need another shutdown player who can eliminate their matchup.
Round 2: Kynstonn Viliamu-Asa: LB, Notre Dame
Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa returned from a torn ACL in week two for the Fighting Irish and didn’t miss a beat. The six-foot-three, 324-pound linebacker showcased his elite instincts, ability to stop the run, and fluidity in coverage in his limited snaps against Rice. He could be a major riser during the season if he continues this level of play.
This is no shade on the Saints linebackers’ performance in week one. Pete Werner, Kaden Elliss, and Danny Stutsman all played well, but it still needs addressing next offseason. After losing Demario Davis, Staley needs his new signal caller and could find it in Viliamu-Asa.
Round 3: Hollywood Smothers: RB, Texas
Hollywood Smothers hasn’t gotten enough recognition in Texas’ offense and is the motor behind it, tallying 31 attempts for 143 yards and two touchdowns. He’s patient in the backfield, then has enough agility to use one cut and find green grass. Additionally, he’s dangerous and evasive in open space.
The Saints currently have a great running back room, despite a lackluster week one showing. However, Alvin Kamara is 31 years old and likely won’t be playing for much longer. Because of this, don’t be surprised to see Kellen Moore find his successor in April.
