Concepcion's explosive versatility could unlock the Saints' offense and special teams, offering a dynamic "slot-plus" weapon for quarterback Tyler Shough.

The 2026 NFL Draft is days away, and for the New Orleans Saints, the selection of KC Concepcion out of Texas A&M could definitely be a strategic addition.

After a 2025 season where the Saints’ offense often felt like a high-performance engine missing a spark plug, Mickey Loomis and the front office finally leaned into the "positionless football" era. By bringing the Paul Hornung Award winner to the Big Easy, New Orleans is giving quarterback Tyler Shough the ultimate safety net and the most versatile weapon in this class.

The "Slot-Plus" Evolution

For years, the Saints have been searching for that unique hybrid of receiver, runner, and returner that made the Sean Payton era so difficult to defend. Concepcion has that pedigree.

At 5’11” and 196 pounds, he doesn't have the towering frame of a true X-receiver, but his production at Texas A&M proved he’s much more than a gadget guy. He dominated the SEC last year where he recorded 61 receptions for 919 yards and 9 receiving touchdowns, averaging 15.1 yards per catch and led the conference in receiving touchdowns. While Chris Olave continues to pull the top off defenses, Concepcion is the guy who will turn a three-yard choice route into a 40-yard house call.

Why It Works for Tyler Shough

Tyler Shough’s success in New Orleans hinges on getting the ball out quickly and letting his playmakers work.

  • The YAC Monster: Concepcion was a top-three receiver in yards after catch (YAC) efficiency last season.
  • Route Polish: Despite the "shifty" label, his route tree at A&M was surprisingly diverse. He counters jams effectively and understands how to sit in the voids of a zone defense, which is a necessity in Brandon Staley’s evolving offensive scheme.
  • The Concentration Tax: Let’s be real—the drops are the one red flag. He had seven last year. But for a team that has struggled to find a consistent third-down chain-mover, you live with the occasional drop for the explosive playmaking he brings.

A Special Teams Game-Changer

We can’t ignore the 456 punt return yards and two touchdowns he posted for the Aggies in 2025. In a league where field position is becoming increasingly dictated by the new kickoff rules, having a guy who can flip the field on any given Saturday (or Sunday) is a luxury the Saints haven't consistently enjoyed since the early days of Deonte Harty.

My Two Pennies

Drafting Concepcion over a traditional "X" like Jordyn Tyson or an edge rusher is a gamble on explosiveness over size. It signals that the Saints are done trying to build a "standard" offense. They want to be fast, they want to be versatile, and they want to make defensive coordinators stay up late on Saturday nights.

If the Saints can tighten up his concentration and use him in the backfield as a change-of-pace runner alongside Alvin Kamara, the Who Dat Nation might be looking at the most exciting rookie "gadget weapon" to hit the Caesars Superdome.
