The New Orleans Saints' initial free agency acquisitions are signed. Although they will continue to pick up players, we have a clearer view of what the teams' needs are. Because of this, the Saints' top targets at pick eight are becoming clearer. Here are the top three options they should consider in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
An honorable mention is given to any of the top-four wide receivers: Jordyn Tyson, Makai Lemon, Carnell Tate, and Denzel Boston. Each of these players would be a fantastic addition and would elevate the offense.
Sonny Styles: LB, Ohio State
If it wasn’t clear before free agency, it is now: Sonny Styles is the number one option for the Saints. Linebacker is a massive need, as they lost Demario Davis to the New York Jets. They did sign Kaden Elliss, which helps, but won’t fix it.
Sonny Styles is a natural leader who will help fill the void left by Davis. The former Buckeye is outstanding against the run and rarely misses a tackle. Additionally, his athleticism allows him to shut down opposing tight ends and running backs in coverage.
The only question around Styles is if he will be on the board at pick eight. He’s frequently mocked higher, but could fall. If he does, Styles would be a fantastic addition and the cornerstone of the Saints' defense for the foreseeable future.
Rueben Bain Jr.: EDGE, Miami
Rueben Bain is suffering from serious prospect fatigue. He’s been viewed as a top player in the 2026 NFL Draft since May of 2025. This is causing analysts to overthink his profile, which is causing him to fall. Regardless of this, he’s an ideal pairing for the Saints in the first round.
Bain will be an impactful three-down presence in the NFL. He’s a monster against the run, consistently penetrating the backfield. Plus, he’s a dangerous triple-threat pass rusher who can win with speed, technique, and power. He’s a developed prospect, which will help make the transition to the next level seamless.
Bain to the Saints would be a mix of the best player available and team need. They haven’t addressed edge rusher so far in free agency, which was previously one of the biggest needs. Because of this, they must invest in the position early in April.
Caleb Downs: S, Ohio State
Similar to Styles, Downs would be the next leader for the Saints' defense. His versatility would allow defensive coordinator Brandon Staley to implement him in a variety of ways. A key reason this is possible is his high IQ, which lets him recognize his responsibility everywhere on the field.
The sole reason Downs isn’t getting more hype is because of the positional value argument. Some analysts think safety is less important than other positions, which is causing him to fall. Despite this, he would be a stellar addition for the Saints.
