The NFC West showdown featured seven turnovers and 38 points off of them as San Francisco maintained its division lead.

The Week 5 matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers played out just as you'd expect between two elite defenses in a game to determine first place in the division.

San Francisco prevailed over Seattle in a wild 32-29 game on Sunday that saw both teams combined for seven turnovers at Lumen Field. The 38 total points scored off of those turnovers were the most in a regular-season game since 2017.

Neither offense played at its full potential. Sam Darnold was 18 of 29 for 195 yards, and the Seahawks offense produced 251 yards. The 49ers gained 269 yards, and Brock Purdy was 19 of 29 for 185 yards.

Both quarterbacks found their top receivers throughout. Veteran wideout Mike Evans totaled 113 yards receiving for the 49ers, and All-Pro star Jaxon Smith-Njigba hauled in 102 yards. Each player found the end zone, but it was Smith-Njigba's third-down drop on Seattle's final drive that ended the chance for a potential game-tying field goal.

Seahawks kicker Jason Myers remained busy despite not having one final opportunity. Myers made a season-high five field goals to supply points for the Seahawks amid frequent possession changes from both sides.

The win maintains San Francisco's place atop the NFC West at 5-0, while Seattle drops to 3-2 and suffers its first home loss of the season.

First Quarter - Both teams score off early takeaways

Darnold threw his fourth interception of the season, and Renardo Green's pick quickly turned into points for the Niners. Purdy found Mike Evans on a goal-line slant to put San Francisco on the board.

For the second week in a row, Seattle benefited from a muffed punt from the opposition. Returner Jacob Cowing was blown up and fumbled Michael Dickson's punt, and the Seahawks recovered.

On the ensuing possession, running back Emmanuel Wilson ran in a 2-yard touchdown.

Both defenses remained in control early on as each used sacks to force 3-and-outs at the end of the period. Byron Murphy's sack of Purdy on third down was the first time the San Francisco signal-caller was taken down behind the line this season.

Darnold connected with Smith-Njigba on a 38-yard completion at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter - 49ers' defense comes up clutch after ejection

Smith-Njigba added a 16-yard reception on the drive to set up a Myers 49-yard field goal that gave Seattle a 10-7 lead. On his second reception, it appeared that JSN tweaked his right ankle.

After an eight-play drive ended in a punt, the 49ers got another turnover as Wilson's fumble was recovered by the defense. Fred Warner's third forced fumble of the season leads the NFL.

On the next play from scrimmage, San Francisco retook the lead at 14-10 on an 11-yard touchdown run by Christian McCaffrey.

Tensions flared in the division rivalry as Darnold was hit late out of bounds by Dre Greenlaw, who was then ejected from the game after head-butting a player who was not wearing a helmet on the sideline.

The 49ers responded by sacking Darnold twice, and Seattle settled for a 50-yarder from Myers.

With less than half a minute remaining in the half, the Seahawks' ball security issues reared their ugly head in the worst position. George Holani was stripped at the 1-yard line, and San Francisco recovered the fumble in the end zone for the third takeaway of the half and a touchdown. Niners led 21-13 at halftime in a defensive stalwart that left Lumen Field stunned after two quarters.

Third Quarter - Seahawks use missed FG, interception, fumble to take the lead

Green intercepted Darnold for a second time as the cornerback jumped the route by tight end Elijah Arroyo. The 49ers, however, were unable to flip the turnover into points for a fourth time; San Francisco kicker Eddy Pineiro missed a 52-yard field goal.

Myers tacked on a field goal to trim the 49ers' lead to 21-16.

Next series, Purdy was intercepted on a diving play by Seahawks cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett. Seattle capitalized on the field position with Smith-Njigba splitting through the defense for a 16-yard touchdown that gave the Seahawks a 23-21 lead.

Seattle kept the defensive momentum with a fumble recovery. Deebo Samuel left the game with a hamstring injury after fumbling a handoff to the left.

Myers's fourth field goal stretched the Seahawks' lead to 26-21.

Fourth Quarter - Field goal and JSN drop seal road win for 49ers

Purdy settled down by using veteran receivers Evans and Brandin Cooks on a 12-yard drive to begin the quarter, with the latter catching a short touchdown pass.

The 49ers' 2-point conversion attempt to Evans was initially broken up, but Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe was called for pass interference. Purdy scrambled and found Evans on the second try, putting San Francisco up 29-26.

After a long kickoff return from Rashid Shaheed, Darnold hit the speedy receiver for a gain of 22 yards. Myers' 40-yard field goal tied the game at 29 apiece.

San Francisco matched with an eight-play march ending in a 44-yard field goal from Pineiro that gave the Niners a 32-29 advantage after the two-minute warning.

A 35-yard pass from Darnold to Smith-Njigba brought the Seahawks to midfield, but another long pass to the reigning Offensive Player of the Year fell through his arms on third down. Cooper Kupp's reception was ruled short of the line to gain on fourth down, as he lunged with his arms extended out of bounds.

The 49ers knelt on the victory to improve to 5-0 for the third time under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
