Lawrence had a plan to finish his career last season, but what changed his mind and made him decide to come back in 2026?
Seattle Seahawks defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence had a plan at the end of the 2025 season, and that plan went out the window rather quickly.
With the veteran playing a key role in the Seahawks' Super Bowl triumph, it would have been hard to walk away from what Mike Macdonald has built.
While Lawrence was going back and forth on potentially retiring, he eventually decided to have one more go-around as Seattle looks to defend its Super Bowl title.
Playing and starting 16 regular-season games and producing 6.0 sacks, 20 quarterback hits, and 11 tackles for loss, the veteran was very productive in his first year as a Seahawk. Not to mention his three forced fumbles in three playoff games.
So that in itself can make it hard to hang up the cleats, knowing you still have gas in the tank.
And for Lawrence, he revealed that he had a plan in place once the season ended regarding his future, but something changed, and now he's back.
"I kind of had my mind made up that if I won, I was done," Lawrence said. "But I kind of had a bittersweet feeling in my heart, understanding that with the type of team that we have, we should have been where we were last year. This is where the hard part begins and staying on top."
The thirst to climb the mountain again with the Seahawks, and with Mike Macdonald's "Dark Side" being the driving force behind Seattle's Super Bowl defense, Lawrence won't be a bit-part player in 2026.
He will again be seen as a key cog in the defensive machine at edge, along with Dante Fowler Jr, Leonard Williams, Mike Morris, and Jared Ivey.
It is clear that Lawrence has the appetite to go around again, and for most players, that is the first thing that begins to waver when you have reached the summit. But not for Lawrence.
Being the hunter brings a whole different perspective, and it is clear that the chance to again prove to the NFL world that they are deserving Super Bowl champions was enough for Lawrence to put off retirement for another year.
