Jalen Milroe gets a full-game audition as the Seahawks face the Chiefs, giving Seattle one final look before cutting its roster to 53.
Jalen Milroe will own the spotlight when the Seattle Seahawks close their preseason against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night at Arrowhead Stadium.
Seattle plans to let Milroe play the entire game while Sam Darnold, Drew Lock and most of the Seahawks’ starters watch from the sideline.
That makes the matchup far more than another disposable August exhibition. It’s the clearest evaluation yet of whether Milroe is developing into a legitimate NFL quarterback.
Everyone knows about the physical tools. Milroe has the arm strength to attack defenses vertically and the speed to punish them when a play breaks down.
Those traits made him one of Seattle’s most intriguing developmental projects.
The questions involve everything between the highlights.
Can Milroe identify pressure before the snap? Will he remain patient when his first read disappears? Can he deliver accurate intermediate throws without immediately escaping the pocket?
A full night against Kansas City should provide answers that scattered preseason series can’t.
Seattle’s other roster hopefuls will be auditioning alongside him. With final cuts approaching, the Seahawks must settle competitions at receiver, running back, defensive back and special teams.
Montorie Foster Jr. has already helped himself by catching a touchdown against Dallas. Jake Bobo’s placement on injured reserve created additional uncertainty at receiver, giving Foster and other young targets a better opportunity to claim a spot.
Their chemistry with Milroe could influence multiple roster decisions at once.
The matchup also carries an unusual reunion angle, even if the featured player likely won’t participate.
Former Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III joined Kansas City after helping the Chiefs win the Super Bowl, but a foot injury is expected to keep him out Friday.
His true return to Seattle is scheduled for Oct. 25, when the Chiefs visit Lumen Field in a regular-season matchup.
Kansas City has its own young quarterback to evaluate. Seventh-round pick Garrett Nussmeier completed 13 of 19 passes for 98 yards in his preseason debut.
He’ll try to convince Andy Reid that the Chiefs should retain three quarterbacks behind Patrick Mahomes and Justin Fields.
Neither Seattle nor Kansas City has won this preseason. Both enter the finale 0-2, and the Chiefs haven’t earned an August victory since 2023.
That won’t matter once the regular season begins. Individual performances will.
For dozens of players, Friday is the final opportunity to avoid the waiver wire. For Milroe, it’s something bigger: a three-hour chance to prove he can become more than Seattle’s most fascinating athlete.
He can begin proving he’s an NFL quarterback.
