We support NFL players having nicknames, and for Seattle Seahawks tight end A.J. Barner, his nickname is top-notch.
But the story behind it is even better.
With the Seahawks Super Bowl champs and Barner having a good second season in Klint Kubiak's offense, as he totaled 519 yards and 6 TDs from 52 receptions, it is no wonder that there is a feel-good vibe around the second-year tight end.
But now there might be a reason why Barner might become a Seattle fan favorite in 2026, and it is due to his nickname.
Barner has been known as "Captain Hook" and we didn't know the reason for that, and we assumed there was a good story behind it...and we were right.
Barner was a guest on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, and the topic of his nickname came up after Cooper Kupp revealed it to the media.
And as it turns out, what led to Barner's nickname happened in Week 6, against the Jacksonville Jaguars pre-game.
“Pull up to the stadium, going through my normal routine,” Barner said. “Y’all know how it is, you go to the bathroom before the game, you got to. So, I get up in there, I’m gonna go do my thing or whatever.”
“Y’all know how it is in the stall, I go to lean forward and sit back, crack my head on this hook that’s like on the back of the stall [door]. Then I went out, won the game, had my season-high in receiving yards basically on one catch I had for 61 yards. And we won the game and I cracked my head open, that’s it.”
So Barner has developed the "Captain Hook" nickname, all because he hit his head on the hook that is on the back of the stall. That's outstanding.
We get the sense that A.J. doesn't take himself too seriously, and by revealing what led to his nickname, it is clear that he isn't bothered by it at all.
After a superb second season with the Seahawks, now the fan base has another reason to like Barner even more, and while A.J. might have hoped he could connect with the fan base in a better way, I imagine that next season, we might see some Captain Hooks in the stands of Lumen Field.
